Create a LinkedIn Account

You probably already know how to create an account, and you might even have one that's inactive or hasn't been used in a while (maybe you forgot your password?).

I won't go through the steps to create an account since you're likely familiar with them.

However, I recommend using a email address and making sure your profile is and all sections are to non-connections.


Add your headline

Your headline is one of the first things people see. It should quickly convey who you are and what you do.

By default, this is your job title, but you can use more descriptive language to position yourself better

Add the name of your workplace at the end if possible, or add technologies you’re skilled at

But keep it concise and specific


Add a Profile Photo

Profiles with photos get significantly more views. A professional photo builds credibility and trust.

Statistics show that LinkedIn members with a photo receive far more engagement: times more profile views and times more connection requests.

Don't have a professional photo? No problem! Here are some tips to take a great photo:

  • Pick a photo that looks like you (on a good day)
  • Use a high-resolution image
  • Make sure your face takes up at least of the frame
  • Be the person in the picture
  • Get someone else to take the picture for you
  • Take a photo with the proper (smile)
  • Avoid backgrounds
  • Wear what you would usually wear at work

Add a Background Photo

A background photo makes your profile stand out and adds a touch.

It can be a photo of your workspace, a cityscape, or a nature scene. Just make sure it's high-quality and professional.

Recommended size: 1584 (w) x 396 (h)

If you don't have a background photo, you can use a to generate something imaginative for you.


About Section

This section is your chance to tell . It should highlight your professional journey, skills, and what you're passionate about.

When I say story, I mean a short, narrative that gives people a who you are and what you do.

It's the place to help people understand who you are beyond your job title.

Here are some tips on how to write a compelling About section:

  • Written in first person
  • Usually 1 - 5 sentences long
  • Add technologies you’re skilled in. This will help you rank higher on LinkedIn searches.
  • Add something like ā€˜Developed GitNote, an open-source developer progression tracking platform. This shows the open-source experience you gained in the past and your ability to work on a team project
  • Add your link

Create a Custom URL
